What to Expect in an Intuitive Movement Class
So, you’re curious about intuitive movement classes. First of all – yes, go for it. If you’ve ever felt disconnected from your body or trapped by the rigidity of structured workouts an intuitive movement class might just be the reset your body needs.
What Are These Classes Like?
Unlike traditional fitness classes, intuitive movement classes don’t have a set “routine.” Instead, they create more space for exploration, expression and self-connection.
Just a heads up:
This is how I teach intuitive movement. I’m sure other people have slightly different approaches, but this is what works best for me and has gotten great feedback from past participants.
So here’s what you can expect:
1. Grounding & Body Awareness
Classes often begin with breathwork, a body scan, or meditation to help you drop in.
You’ll be invited to notice where your body feels tense, open, heavy, or light.
Personally I like working with themes. The meditation therefore will focus on a specific intention that then flows into the movement practice, allowing participants to embody and explore it in their own way.
2. Guided But Freeform Movement
As I said, I like to choose a theme for the class, as (in my opinion) intuitive movement is a way to empower people. Themes could be self-trust, joy, confidence, grounding, or emotional release – guiding the movement experience in a deeper way.
I might give prompts like:
“Follow your breath and let your body respond.”
“What happens if you lead with your hips instead of your feet?”
“Move like you’re underwater.”
—> There’s no right or wrong – just movement that feels natural.
3. Music & Flow States
Expect an eclectic playlist: ambient sounds, drums, indie or even silence.
Music often helps guide your movement without dictating it.
4. Emotional & Somatic Release
Many people feel shifts – joy, laughter, even tears – as movement unlocks emotions. Movement becomes a conversation between your body and mind. It’s a way to explore freedom, power and alignment.
5. Playfulness & Creativity
Some classes encourage play – rolling, crawling, moving like different animals. You might also explore contrasts: light vs. heavy, slow vs. fast. They all align with the given theme and help you connect deeper with yourself!
6. Closing & Integration
Classes often end with stillness, stretching, or reflection. Some instructors invite journaling or sharing experiences. When I choose to pair Intuitive Movement Workshops with Authentic Relating, I usually give people time to talk about what just happened, where they are at and what they are curious about.
What If I Feel Awkward?
Not gonna lie: you probably will – at first. We’re so conditioned to move “correctly” that moving freely can feel… weird. But once you push past that initial discomfort, something shifts. You start to feel at home in your body again.
